The following information is from my old Geocities website and deals with Low VHF reception at the height of solar cycle 23 (2000 - 2002). Scroll down for some interesting logs and audio links.

An Introduction to low VHF Skip.

Sitting on a Sunny March afternoon two scanning radios on my desk are tumbling through a hundred good reasons for listening to Low VHF. A Fire dispatcher in Massachusetts is checking his communications system with neighbouring rural counties. He un-keys his mike and is quickly replaced by a Turkish Police officer who although unintelligible to my English speaking brain is clearly getting more and more irate by the second!. I turn the main tuning knob and two Russian women are having a phone conversation- if only they knew!, More numbers spin and a traditional musician in West Africa is playing a long mesmerising dirge, and then there’s always the evening to look forward to, I wonder will California come in today…….How the hell far is it to California?.

Describing this aspect of the radio hobby as “ Utility Reception” does not  I’m afraid do the traffic received much justice!. It’s hard to say why you should check out Low VHF, but here are a few pointers which I hope will help you on your way to one of those sunny afternoons when being into radio is just about as much fun as is good for you!.

What is Low VHF Skip/ DX?

DX- ing at Low VHF  frequencies is the hobby of searching out distant radio signals between 30 and 87.5 megahertz. Low vhf occupies the part of the radio spectrum between the top of Short Wave and the bottom of the VHF- FM broadcast band. Because of this it displays some of the characteristics of both HF ( High Frequency) and VHF ( Very High frequency), this provides great opportunity for long distance reception by DX-ers.

What can be heard?
.

Depending on prevailing atmospheric conditions signals can be heard  distances anywhere between 500 miles and literally the other side of the globe. When things are working well a wide variety of communications can be monitored, including military and emergency traffic, phone systems, business and paging transmissions and much more. Between 45 and 63 mhz some foreign TV vision and sound broadcasts can be received. While during the summer here in
Europe some East European FM radio stations can be heard between 66 and 74 mhz in the old Eastern Bloc OIRT FM band. Broadcast links between studios and transmitter sites also often use Low VHF.

What kind of radio do I need?

Any wideband receiver covering 30- 87.5 mhz will bring you signals, some however work better than others. Communications receivers work very well but are costly, while scanning radios provide a good compromise. They also have the added benefits of fast scanning and search rates. This means you will be able to search through vast swathes of silent frequencies to find the active ones relatively quickly.

Many scanners produced for the European market have in the past not covered all of Low VHF, instead their coverage has started around 68 mhz. If you are thinking of buying a radio to get into Low VHF reception make sure that it covers the right frequencies!. Hearing very distant signals at higher VHF and UHF frequencies is extremely rare so think Low VHF!

When choosing a radio try and find one with good blocking against overloading and spurious signals. Check out the specifications and look for image rejection figures- the higher the number the better. Above 50 db is good. You want a radio which will be capable of handling a decent sized antenna without filling Low VHF with unwanted ghost signals from Short Wave- covering all those nice dx signals you want to hear. Base scanners are designed to work with base antennae and are usually a little better in this regard. A good choice is the old Realistic PRO 2006 base scanner, these are sometimes found on ebay at affordable prices. You can plug a monster antenna into this radio and get away with it!

What kind of Antenna do I need?
.

A simple wire fed to your scanner or receiver 3.5 metres long I have found works very well for Low VHF reception. Mount this horizontal at a slope of about 30 degrees. Simple antennas such as dipoles and quarter wave ground plane also work quite well. CB antennas are also quite good. Experimenting is the key to better reception so don’t be afraid to try different things- just avoid overhead power lines in doing so!- there is nothing better than coming up with something homebuilt cheap and simple which brings in signals a little better. Use your web browser and check out antenna project sites. Forget about bought scanning antennas, these usually perform at best mediocre on these frequencies and you will come up with something much better yourself and at less cost.

How does Low VHF Skip work and when should I look for signals?

It is important to remember that at VHF frequencies, unlike HF (3-30mhz) the distance covered by signals is relatively short. Often you will hear this referred to as line of sight pick up. So the horizon or shortly beyond it, from your location, is what you are likely under normal conditions to hear.

This said there are some often-occurring anomalies which turn Low VHF into a very interesting place to spend some time. There are modes of propagation which can turn that line of sight rule on its head, and leave you asking, as one friend of mine did on hearing American Fire Brigades- “How the hell is this happening”!.

Propagation Modes and when to look for signals

Sporadic E:

This is a disturbance in the atmospheres E layer. It affects the entire Low VHF frequency range 30- 87.5 mhz. What happens is clouds of electrified gas form in this layer and reflect signals back to earth which would normally leave the atmosphere and head out into space!. The Sporadic E season in
Europe is between Late April and September, usually peaking mid June. It can occur at other times of the year as well, notably October, but this is the main period of activity. What happens is, you will start to hear short range skip on CB frequencies at 25/28 mhz, the ham 10 meter band (28mhz) will be alive and previously quiet frequencies at low VHF (30-87.5mhz) will start to become active with services from abroad. It is not unusual under these conditions to hear French PMR (35-36mhz) or Portuguese Fire brigades (40-41mhz), U.S. Forces in Europe are also often heard. As the disturbance or openings as they are known unfold, higher and higher frequencies will become effected. Hence TV broadcasts from Europe will fade up between 48 and 63 mhz and the East European FM band 66- 74 mhz will come in. Openings can last from minutes up to several days of serious activity. Reception distances for Sporadic E are typically between 500 and 1500 miles, although greater distances are possible under rare circumstances. Sporadic E can happen just about any time of day but night time is less likely, midday and about 6-8 pm I have observed to be busy times.

F1 and F2:

Here we find the atmosphere effected at the F1 and F2 levels 200 to 400 km above ground throwing signals back to earth. This is the main wellspring of major fun at Low VHF!. The cause of this mode of propagation is the same one that effects signals on HF, and that is the sunspot cycle. The sun goes through a cycle which lasts roughly 11 years and effects radio communications on Earth. It has a peak and a trough, and at the moment, 2002, it is likely that we have just passed the second peak of the current cycle. So the likelihood of F1 and F2 skip is very good. In the Northern Hemisphere the time to watch out for this stuff is late September until April with peaks in November and January. Frequencies effected are usually 30 to 50 mhz although it can reach 70 mhz on rare occasions. You will hear public service transmissions from literally right around the Globe!. I personally have managed to hear the California Highway Patrol a mere 6000 plus miles away. The range 30- 50 mhz throws up some great reception during winter with very strong U. S. fire comms between 33.42 and 34 mhz in 20 kc steps.F2 reception starts around dawn or shortly thereafter and concludes after sunset, reception moving from east to west as the day progresses.

Tropospheric enhancement:

This mode of propagation is much more commonly reported at high VHF or UHF frequencies although I have personally noticed its effects as low as 27 mhz- So It will effect Low VHF, particularly in its upper reaches above 50 mhz. Watch out for  distant services which are normally not  received at your location. In areas where Low VHF is in more use tropo will obviously be much more easily noticed. In
Ireland and the U.K. most services are however above 68 mhz. On several occasions I have received signals around 80 mhz from distances in excess of 200 miles. Very high powered Low VHF transmitters in countries like the United States must get out very well via this mode.

Tropo occurs when cool and warm air meets about 2 km above ground. A conductive layer is formed which can act as a kind of pipe for distant signals to travel through. Distances achieved can be up to hundreds of miles. Look out for slow moving high-pressure weather systems, these often bring enhanced reception. Often the best time to check is when the air pressure has been high for a few days and then it suddenly starts to drop. Other good results are found on a cool night after a very warm day. Some of the best Tropo results are achieved near the sea and there is some evidence that sea spray getting up into the upper atmosphere can cause this mode of reception. Tropo can be forecast with a degree of certainty- the link to anticyclonic weather systems being proven. Tropo can occur any time of day but seems more likely at night and early morning after dawn. The seasons of Summer and Autumn also seem most prone to this reception.

Hearing the California Highway Patrol

Remember the old TV programme CHIPS, about two motorcycle cops in California, fighting crime, wearing sunglasses- and generally making growing up in Northern Europe seem bloody cold!!. Well at last you too can take part!

Over the past week or so  transmissions from the CHP have been received here in Europe at surprisingly good strength. What more do you need to sweep away the winter blues?. A plane ticket to L.A.- no can do!, but here's all you need to know to catch a great piece of scanner skip while the atmospheric conditions hold out.

The CHP use the 39 and 42mhz bands for their base to car and bike transmissions- listed below are all their base offices and the Frequencies they use. I have not listed the mobile frequencies since these will be of a much smaller power output and therefore much more unlikely to make it way over here.

The CHP use an identifying office number during transmissions, so once you know you are hearing them it's relatively easy to identify which one you are listening to. For instance "79-63" will mean office 79 calling car 63-check the number out on the list and hey presto it's West L.A.! The signals arrive around 16:00 and fade out after sunset. Watch out for signals with fast fading on them this is a dead giveaway that you are in luck. There is much U.S. traffic being heard on these two bands right now so keep your ears peeled- listen out for road and interstate numbers and place names.

Those offices marked have been heard by me Jan/ Feb/ March 2002.Those appearing most often at the moment are those on 39 mhz- anytime between 15:30 and 19:30 utc. March 15th saw a huge opening toward CA with many new offices heard. Double x denotes most commonly heard centres.
